Darin Draws #48
Objects in mirror may be closer than they appear.
Burning the old man. I watched a glowing mermaid dive deep to a burning pearl sinking into the Olympics. Could I walk to the top of my hill and watch the sun set every night this coming year? Slow this life down, take time, to feel small? Is it possible to move every heavy thing around? The cycle of things.
This year I lost friends. This year I made new friends. This year I got closer to old friends. This year I got Covid. This year I picked blueberries. This year I trick-or-treated in the rain. This year I started working at a bookstore. This year I shelved the Self Help section. This year I read 67 books. This year I started my biggest art project in a long time. This year I ran out of steam, dried up, all my creative magic spent. Forever?! This year I freaked out. This year, on a call the other day I felt the glow of a new sunrise inside me. The cycle of things.
Sharks were swimming before we had trees, before Saturn had rings, before there was a North Star. Dinosaurs watched the continents change places. I’m gonna live 4000 weeks. I have the music sensibilities of an 83 year old human. The cycle of things.
My favorite books I read this year in no particular order are:
Abel’s Island by William Steig
Pin Pong Vol. 1&2 by Taiyo Matsumoto
Charlottes Web by E.B. White
Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger
NYC Outlaws by Ken Landgraf
All Fours by Miranda July
Berlin Shuffle by Ulrich A. Boschwitz
The Wax Child by Olga Ravn
Words with Wings and Magic Things by Mathew Burgess
Tokyo These Days by Taiyo Matsumoto
I will be sending out packages to paying subscribers next week. Thank you for your patience. I like all of us involved in this project too much to wave my arms around and quack for the sake of an algorithm or staying on schedule. Here’s to a new year of making art.
Draw to heal. Draw to Feel. Draw to play.
Thanks for being here. Thanks for being you.
Darin

My favourite subscriptions on Substack are the ones like yours that don’t publish on a schedule, that just appear at random intervals, I like the unpredictability and wondering if I’m going to see something new
